    A settlement is a place where people live. The people that live there are the inhabitants of the settlement. The number of inhabitants is called the population.

The population gets bigger for two reasons:

  • More people are born than die.
  • People come in from other places. These people are immigrants.

Sometimes, the population gets smaller:

  • More people die than are born.
  • People go away to other places. These people are emigrants.
